The Beech mast (seeding) this season is predicted to be one of the larger and more widespread in recent times. Additionally, this is the second year in a row where this has occurred. Normally this only occurs once every 4 to 5 years. The result will be an excess of food available to mice and other rodents whose population increased last year and should soar this year. The biggest concentration of Beech is in Southland and some parts of Canterbury but there are Beech forests throughout the Central North Island as well.

New Zealand as a trout fishing destination is very affordable, if you know how to go about it. The main items that can make it expensive are staying at fishing lodge style accommodation and using fishing guides. For visitors to New Zealand that don’t have any local knowledge, guides and lodges might seem like the only realistic solution. After all you wouldn’t want to spend the time, money and effort to get here and then not know what to do or where to do it.

There are three regions in New Zealand that have differences in the length of their fly-fishing season. Most of the North island runs from 1 October to 30 June. Some North Island rivers remain open all year but any area that is a potential spawning ground is closed from the end of June to the beginning of October. The waters that remain open are generally the lower reaches of the large rivers. The lower reaches do hold resident trout during that time of year but, often the water is clouded due to rain and the majority of fish have moved upstream or into tributaries to spawn.

I have golfed in several countries including; Canada, USA, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and of course NZ. I have also been employed as the General Manager of one of New Zealand’s major metropolitain golf courses. I would rate New Zealand as one of the most affordable and accessible places to play golf in the World (especially if you take the exchange rate for the New Zealand dollar into account.)
