This popular tourist attraction is located near the small rural town of Matamata approximately 2.5 hours’ drive from the main international airport in Auckland NZ. The route from Auckland to Matamata is relatively straightforward following State Highway 1 and State Highway 2.
If you are coming to New Zealand and are a Lord of the Rings fan, Hobbiton is a must-see attraction. This is the actual movie set that was used for the filming and is extremely well done. There is a wide variety of tour types and durations and a lot to take in.
There is a basic tour which costs $84NZ for adults and takes about 2 hours. There are package deals that include meals and accommodation on a nearby farm and there are themed and more involved tours depending on your level of interest and of course your budget. https://www.hobbitontours.com/en/our-tours/hobbiton-movie-set-tour/
Matamata does not have many other tourist activities or attractions but is on the main route you would take to visit Rotorua. Rotorua is a major tourist centre with a wealth of attractions based around Maori culture, Geothermal activity and adventure sports. Rotorua is approximately a one-hour drive from Matamata.
If you plan on touring the North Island of New Zealand then the main places of interest are likely to be Waitomo, Taupo, Rotorua and Matamata (if you are a Lord of the rings fan). These places are all within a couple of hours of each other and you can travel in a loop to end up back in Auckland. There is a huge variety of other things to do and see especially if you are into golfing, fly fishing, hiking or other outdoor adventures. A ten-day circuit of the central North Island would give you time to visit the highlights without rushing.
