New Zealand Self Drive Adventures

Enjoyable and relaxed golf in stunning surroundings

New Zealand has an unbelievable number of golf courses in relation to the population. Every small town has a course and larger centers have multiple courses. Cities like Auckland, have tens of courses.

NZ golf prices by world standards are exceptional value. Eighteen holes can range from $10 to $250. Well maintained country courses with 7 day per week clubhouse facilities are generally around $30 per round. Small country courses with clubhouse facilities that are only open on the weekends average about $20 per round. Courses in major centres can be anywhere from $50 to $150. Resort courses like Cape Kidnappers, Kauri Cliffs and Kinloch are usually $150+ but remember that is New Zealand dollars. Courses in very small towns can cost as little a $10. (There is usually an honesty box where you deposit your green fee and clubhouse facilities are seldom open.)

Aside from resort courses, the golf courses in New Zealand are mostly owned by the club membership and are non-profit organisations. Either Saturday or Sunday is usually reserved for member competitions. At a smaller club you are likely to be invited to join the competition if you arrive on a members day. At the larger clubs you will not be able to play due to a full start sheet and a members-first attitude when tee times are scarce.

In addition to member’s day, many clubs have one morning set aside for lady’s golf. The remainder of the week you can tee off almost immediately without a booking. In the larger cities you will need to book a tee time regardless of the day of the week and may struggle to get a tee time on the weekend.

Because of the climate, rapid plant growth and unusual geography, there are some surprisingly beautiful golf courses that can be played for a nominal fee. During mid-week it is not unusual to be the only person on the course if you are in a small town.

New Zealand is a golfer’s paradise and our self drive itineraries show you how to make the most of a golfing holiday.
