Transport and Accommodation
There are several affordable methods to travel and stay in New Zealand:
Holiday Parks are widespread in NZ. They generally have a range of options from a tent site to powered motorhome sites to cabins. There are toilet and shower facilities, and water and electricity hook ups, waste disposal for motorhomes and communal kitchens. The cabins are usually self- contained with toilet and kitchen. Pricing can range from next to nothing for a tent site to slightly less than a basic motel room for a cabin. Except in peak holiday season you are unlikely to need a reservation which provides great flexibility.
Privately owned Holiday houses are often rented out by the owners when they are not using the property themselves. This is like Air B&B except these properties are unattended and not serviced regularly so part of the deal is that you need to clean up and leave the property as you found it. You also need to organise to pick up the keys or be told where they are hidden. We provide the links that will enable you to book these properties. Bookings are easy to make and usually there is a two or three-bedroom home very close to the river or golf course you plan to visit.
Camping during the warm months is also popular. Some visitors rent a car and rent camping equipment and then stay in a mixture of free camp sites and the above-mentioned holiday parks. This is the least expensive way to travel. There are many designated free camping areas but camping is not allowed in some regions. We provide the link to a tool that identifies where you can camp for free.
Motorhomes are probably the most popular option for self drive holidays, A large percentage of visitors opt for a motorhome rental and stay in a mixture of Holiday parks and free camping sites. This gives the most flexibility in terms of accommodation but reduces the ease of driving and access to remote locations.
Air B&B and Motels are another option.
Depending on size of vehicle, a general guideline for daily costs is as follows:
Motorhome and powered site rental $150 - $250 NZD per day
Rental car, camping equipment rental & campsite $ 80 -$120 NZD per day
Rental car and cabin or motel $150 - $200 NZD per day** **
